Often wrongly pronounced as mould wine, which doesn't sound too pleasant, mulled wine is perfect for the festive period. This spiced alcoholic drink is a great way to warm up on a chilly winter’s night. Feel all toasty by a fire and catch up with friends this Christmas with a glass of homemade mulled wine in your hand.
What is mulled wine?
Dating back hundreds of years, the mulled wine recipe may have changed slightly, but the simple practice of cooking up a glass or two of mulled wine is still greatly celebrated. Countries around Europe have their own take on the classic; in Germany mulled wine is known as Glühwein. In France it’s vin chaud, it’s glogg in Sweden and Vin Brulé in Italy.
The hottest wines around
When it comes to any recipe, choosing the right ingredients is the most important thing. The same rules apply to mulled wine, so make sure you nail your fruity flavours down before heading to the stove. The best wine for mulled wine is a bold red with deep berry tasting notes. Choose a plush red wine like a Malbec for big flavours or a Shiraz or Shiraz Cabernet for something a little spicier. You’ll want to choose a wine with a bold taste with flavours that will not be overpowered by the spices.

120g of light brown sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
Pinch of grated nutmeg
2 star anise
3 whole cloves
Lemon (to taste)
2 bottles of fruity Barefoot Malbec, Shiraz or Shiraz Cabernet
1 glass of brandy or port (optional)
Recipe
Making mulled wine couldn't be easier, just follow this simple three step guide and you’ll be well on your way to warming up this winter.
Step 1
Chop the oranges with the peel still intact into segments and add to a large saucepan, along with the sugar and spices.
Step 2
Add just a quarter of a cup of red wine to the saucepan and bring to the boil for about 5-8 minutes, or until the sugar has turned into a thick syrup. Stir occasionally.
Step 3
Turn the heat down and add the rest of the wine and a glass of brandy or port if required. Gently heat through for a further 10-15 minutes and taste. If the mixture is too sweet, balance it out with a squeeze of lemon juice. Ladle the hot liquid into glass mugs and garnish with orange peel.
Enjoy this cup of Christmas and the warmth of the berry notes with its rich, spicy oak scent. Mulled wine is a great way to get into the festive spirit and the perfect drink to serve and share this winter.
